Τι είναι αυτό;
Hunter boots are expensive because the price pays for natural rubber boots assembled by hand from many sections, a long design history, fashion collaborations and a well-known name, but buyers have reported cracking, so the price does not guarantee a longer life.

Hunter μπότες have been a familiar sight on British country walks and at muddy music festivals for decades.
On Hunter’s US website in October 2026, the men’s Original Tall rain boot cost $225, which is far more than a basic rubber boot.
This guide explains what that price pays for, the durability complaints buyers have raised, how Hunter compares with other wellington makers, and how to decide whether a pair is worth it for you.
We have not wear-tested Hunter boots ourselves; this guide draws on the company’s own information and dated reports.
How We Judge Whether Rubber Boots Are Worth Their Price
We use the same four criteria for any wellington boot, so you can apply them to Hunter or to a cheaper pair.

| Κριτήριο | Τι να ελέγξετε | Hunter Original Tall |
|---|---|---|
| Υλικά και κατασκευή | Natural rubber or synthetic, lined or unlined, and how the boot is assembled. | Natural rubber; Hunter says the boot is made from 28 rubber sections assembled by hand over three days. |
| Κατάλληλος | Calf width, instep height, and whether you can pull the boot on and off easily. | A tall shaft with an adjustable buckle strap at the top. |
| Χρήση | Whether you need a boot for town, festivals, dog walks, farm work or cold weather. | Unlined, so best for wet, mild conditions; insulated versions cost more. |
| Τιμή και εγγύηση | The price against similar boots, the warranty length and where you bought them. | $225 in the US in October 2026; check the warranty with your retailer. |
A high price is not proof of a longer life, so the label is only the starting point.
Where Hunter Boots Come From
Hunter traces its history to the North British Rubber Company, set up in Edinburgh in 1856 by the American businessman Henry Lee Norris.
The company made more than a million pairs of trench boots for the British Army in the First World War, and first made its green Original boot in 1955 or 1956 (sources differ: Wikipedia gives the winter of 1955, while Hunter’s US website describes the Original Tall boot’s style as dating “since 1956”).
Hunter received Royal Warrants as a supplier of waterproof footwear from the Duke of Edinburgh in 1976 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1986, and our guide to Hunter’s royal warrants and how to wear the boots explains what a warrant does and does not show.
The business has changed hands several times: the Hunter Rubber Company went into administration in 2006 and was bought by a private consortium, which formed Hunter Boot Ltd.
In 2008 the company moved its headquarters from Dumfries to Edinburgh; by then it was sourcing boots from suppliers in Europe and the Far East.
Hunter Boot Ltd went into administration again in June 2023, owing creditors £112.8 million, and Authentic Brands Group bought the Hunter brand, with partner companies licensed to design and sell the boots in Europe and the United States.
If where your boots are made matters to you, check the label of the pair you are buying.
What a Hunter Price Pays For
1. Natural rubber and hand assembly
Hunter says its men’s Original Tall boot is handcrafted from 28 separate sections of natural rubber, assembled over three days on a last made for Hunter.
Building a boot from many hand-laid sections takes more labour than moulding a boot in a single shot, and that labour adds to the cost.
Natural rubber is flexible and waterproof, but it is not the only good material for wet-weather boots, and neoprene-shafted boots suit cold weather better.
2. Design and fashion collaborations
Hunter widened its range well beyond the green wellington, with short boots, Chelsea boots, gloss finishes and insulated versions.
In January 2009 it announced a limited-edition black wellington with the designer Jimmy Choo.
In 2013 it appointed Alasdhair Willis as creative director, and it went on to stage catwalk shows at London Fashion Week.
Design teams, collaborations and fashion shows are paid for out of the price of every pair.
3. The name, the heritage and the shops
The Hunter name, the royal warrants and the boots’ long run at festivals such as Glastonbury are a large share of why the brand can charge more than a plain rubber boot.
Brand recognition makes the boots easy to find, but it adds nothing to how a pair fits or how long it lasts.
Durability: What Buyers Have Reported
Some buyers report cracks in the rubber, in one reported case within a year of purchase.
In June 2019 the Sunday Post reported the case of a reader whose Hunter boots cracked within a year of purchase; Hunter first refused a claim and later replaced the boots after the paper’s consumer column intervened.
In that report, Hunter said it had extended its warranty to two years for boots bought from its own shops, its website or authorised stockists.
Keep your receipt and buy from an authorised seller, because a warranty claim usually depends on proof of where and when you bought the boots.
Ownership and suppliers have changed since 2019, so check the current warranty with the shop before you buy.
Hunter Versus Other Wellington Makers
Compare wellington boots by material, lining, fit and warranty first, and by name second.

| Μάρκα | Τι το ξεχωρίζει | Ταιριάζει καλύτερα σε |
|---|---|---|
| Κυνηγός | Natural rubber, a familiar shape and a wide range of colours and lengths. | Town, festivals and mild, wet country walks. |
| Le Chameau | Founded in 1927 in Normandy; natural rubber boots assembled by a single bootmaker, with leather-lined and neoprene-lined options. | Regular country use and cold weather, at a higher price. |
| Αετός | A French maker of rubber boots since 1853 that uses natural rubber. | Country walks and outdoor work. |
| Muck Boot Company | Insulated neoprene shafts with rubber feet. | Cold, wet conditions and long hours outdoors. |
If you only need a boot for a few wet weekends a year, a well-fitting pair from a less expensive maker may serve you just as well.
How to Care for Rubber Boots
Rinse off mud with cold water after each wear, because dried mud and grit wear the rubber at the flex points.
Let wet boots dry at room temperature, away from radiators, fires and direct sunlight, which can dry out and crack rubber.
Store them upright in a cool, dry place rather than folded or squashed, so the rubber does not crease at the ankle.
How to Wear Hunter Boots
Rubber boots are practical footwear, so keep the rest of the outfit practical too.
Wear (country walk): a waxed cotton jacket, a navy crew-neck wool jumper over a check flannel shirt, olive moleskin trousers tucked into dark green Original Tall boots, and thick wool boot socks.
Wear (festival): a navy hooded waterproof jacket, a grey marl T-shirt, black slim jeans and black Original Short boots.
Wear (wet day in town): a navy quilted jacket, a grey merino roll-neck, charcoal wool-blend trousers and black Chelsea rubber boots.

Are Hunter Boots Worth It?
Hunter boots are worth considering if you want a familiar natural rubber wellington for town, festivals and mild country walks, the fit suits your calves and instep, and you buy from an authorised seller with a warranty.
They are harder to justify if you need a boot for daily outdoor work or cold weather, because specialist neoprene or lined boots may suit you better, and plain rubber boots from less expensive makers keep your feet just as dry.
Whatever you choose, judge a pair by its material, fit and warranty, not by the label.
